WHAT A RELIEF! An Introduction to Woodcut Printmaking.
Welcome to ‘What A Relief!’ This course is designed to provide participants with a fun and easy introduction to relief printmaking using materials on hand within the Ottawa City Woodshop, in this case, woodblocks.
The course will begin with a brief introduction to printmaking, the artists who specialize in woodblock prints, and the tools and techniques specific to designing, carving and printing a woodblock print. Then, participants will be led through transferring, carving, and printing their images. This will be done by hand using either wooden spoons or barrens.
During the course, each participant will receive, or have access to:
- Woodblocks
- Design templates (i.e., image to transfer to the woodblock)
- Sheets of Masa, or other light but sturdy printmaking paper
- Woodcut carving tools
- Speedball black washable printmaking inks
- Barrens and/or wooden spoons (i.e., for printing the image)
The aim is for each student to hand print a small series of woodblock prints in black and white.
