Intro to Kanna and Japanese planes (September 26 & 28)
Build your Kanna by hand. A fundamental tool for any craftsperson’s toolbox, the Japanese hand plane is not only visually beautiful, but incredibly versatile for both shaping and finishing wood.
Held over two days, this intermediate-level course will cover comprehensively how to make and tune your own smoothing plane.
We will begin by selecting our own Japanese traditionally hand-forged steel blades and locally sourced hardwood materials. We will then build the necessary skills to maintain and use a completed, ready-to-take-home precision woodworking tool.
The cost includes a 42mm Swedish steel blade, crafted uniquely for this course, a premium quality beech plane body, and 10 hours of instruction by a Japanese hand plane specialist. Some prior hand tool experience is valuable, but not required for participation.
Each student will need their own:
Combination square with protractor (or equivalent)
Pencil or marking knife
If you would like the shop to purchase these tools on your behalf, please choose the "I need tools" option when registering.
Thursday September 26th 6:00 - 9:30pm and Saturday September 28th 9:00am - 5:00pm
*Courses are non-refundable and not transferable to another date. Please ensure they work with your schedule.
