*Taking a previous course at the shop is a prerequisite for Level II*

In this course students who have been introduced to the basic handtools and wood as a material can expand their skills and knowledge.

Students will learn how to interpret shop drawings, select and layout lumber, safely use woodworking machines for milling and joinery, and assemble a final piece of furniture. Opportunity will be included to hone students hand tool skills and deepen their comprehension of how wood works. The goal of this course is to send each student home with heightened understanding and appreciation of woodworking as well as a personally crafted stool.

On the first evening of this course, Tamar will review wood theory, properties of lumber and how to choose the right wood for the types of joinery and furniture you're about to undertake. You'll continue with a review on hand tools and how to read shop drawings.

On the first full day you will cover basic shop safety on all the power tools you'll be using before choosing and milling all your lumber. You'll continue by reviewing the stool plans and laying out all your lumber and joinery.

On the last full day you'll be cutting all your joinery (including wedged mortise and tenons), assembling and finishing your stool.

We're thrilled to have Tamar join the OCW as an instructor. She is a woodworker, healthfood enthusiast and mom. With a decade of professional woodworking experience and two years teaching carpentry at Algonquin College you're in great hands with Level II.
