Evan Blackburn

Evan will take you through all of beginner’s topics you’ll need to get started down your road to creating with wood.

In the first day of this course, Evan will take you through the basics of wood as a building material, its grain, figure, and where to find it. You'll discuss commonly used joints, what they're used for and how to choose one over the other. Additionally you'll see sharpening and hand tool demos and by the end of the day will be introduced to the basics of squaring, flattening and dimensioning wood before trying your hand at cutting your own joinery.

On the second day you will take all the information you have learned and apply it to make 4 different types of basic joints by hand: A rabbet, a mortise and tenon, a bridle, and a lap joint. Each of these joints have different applications, and are commonly used in a variety of projects whether they are cut by hand or with machines. At the end of the day, you will go home with examples you can use as reference for your future projects. It's important to note that this course covers a mix of theory and hands-on practice, which is vital to knowing the foundations of woodworking.
