Foundations of Woodworking (January 9 - 11)
Thursday, January 9th, 6:00 PM - 9:30 PM and
Saturday, January 11th, 1:30 - 7:30pm
Declan Thomas will take you through all of beginner’s topics you’ll need to get started down your road to creating with wood.
In the first day of this course, Declan will take you through the basics of wood as a building material, its grain, figure, and where to find it. You'll discuss commonly used joints, what they're used for and how to choose one over the other. Additionally you'll see sharpening and hand tool demos and by the end of the day will be introduced to the basics of squaring, flattening and dimensioning wood before trying your hand at cutting your own joinery.
On the second day you will take all the information you have learned and start building a hand made box with hand cut dovetail joints. You will get an opportunity to choose a type of wood and general size of your box then use the tools and joinery you learned about in the previous session. At the end of the day you will go home with a beautiful box that you made with your own two hands. It's important to note that this course covers a mix of theory and hands-on practice, which is vital to knowing the foundations of woodworking.
